Château de Cheverny – For children and adults

Just a 50-minute drive from Pierrefitte-sur-Sauldre, the majestic Château de Cheverny awaits you for an immersion in French history and art. One of the most elegant residences on the Loire, it promises a memorable visit during your stay in our region.

A little history

Built between 1624 and 1630, Château de Cheverny has been in the same family for over six centuries. Unlike other Loire châteaux, Cheverny has always been inhabited, giving it a particularly lively and authentic atmosphere.

The château has survived the centuries unhindered, including the French Revolution, thanks to the prudence of its owner at the time, who sold part of the estate to avoid confiscation. This historical continuity is reflected in the remarkable conservation of the site and its collections.

Highlights

The sumptuous interiors

The interior of the château is a veritable museum of the decorative arts. The royal flats are packed with period furniture, Gobelins tapestries and painted ceilings. The King’s bedroom, with its four-poster bed, bears witness to the passage of French monarchs.

The French gardens

Designed by Le Nôtre, the famous gardener of Versailles, the gardens offer an elegant walk through flowerbeds and fountains. In spring, the thousands of tulips create a colourful spectacle not to be missed.

The Tintin exhibition

Did you know that Cheverny was the inspiration for the famous Château de Moulinsart in the adventures of Tintin? A permanent exhibition will delight fans of Hergé’s comics, young and old alike.

The pack of dogs

The only one of its kind in France, the Château maintains a pack of around 100 tricoloured Anglo-French hunting dogs. The spectacle of their meal, served daily, is a tradition that has endured for centuries.

Why visit Cheverny?

The Château de Cheverny stands out for its perfect architectural harmony and authenticity. Unlike other more imposing or better-known châteaux, Cheverny offers an intimate experience of château life. Its ideal proportions and original furnishings make it a perfect example of classical French architecture.

The visit is particularly well suited to families: from the spacious gardens to the Tintin exhibition and the pack of dogs, there’s something for everyone. Audioguides are available in several languages, so you can discover the history of the château at your own pace.

As well as the traditional tours, the château offers a rich programme of events: flower festivals, themed weekends and temporary exhibitions. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a bucolic getaway, Cheverny is sure to please.
